Topic: National Board Certification

National Board Certification is achieved by successfully completing a voluntary assessment program designed to
recognize effective and accomplished teachers who have met high national standards based on what teachers
should know and be able to do. Teachers submit four portfolio entries as part of this rigorous process which
highlight interaction with students, reflection of pedagogical skills, assessment of learned content, and a detailed
description of collaboration with colleagues and families. In addition, the NBPTS candidates demonstrate
mastery of content knowledge by successfully completing assessment center exercises designed to measure
background knowledge that supports quality instruction embedded within FCPS curriculum.

We are delighted to have Dan Brown, Director of the Future Educators Association, Lisa Clarke, Washington
Fellow for the United States Department of Education, Patrick Ledesma, Director of Research and Knowledge
Management for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, Dr. Erin Wigginton and Daina
Lieberman, FCPS National Board Certified Teachers, lead this information session.

Each year, PDK1144 provides a free informational event for teachers and leaders in education. The Educational Forum focuses on a current issue in education. The agenda includes time for discussion and brief snacks.
